I have not owned an external flash for quite a while. I have tried not to use a flash for indoor pictures as much as possible. When I put this flash on my camera, my low light pictures improved dramatically. I have much more flexibility now in low light situations. I cannot tell you how it compares with other products, but i can tell you that it works beautifully with my Canon XTI. I mounted it on the camera and automatically adjusted to the conditions I was shooting in. The swiveling head is easy to pivot quickly. I thought that I was going to get lots of complaints from folks about the flash blinding them. But with the flash pointed up, it is powerful enough to fill the room with light and more evenly distribute the light. I have owned it for about a month and I have a lot to learn about using it.
